  • Determine which public school your child may attend and/or the top three private schools of your choice   
  • Public and private schools hold open houses for prospective parents; call school to schedule to attend the open house; ask all questions you may have and schedule a tour of the school when students are in session
  • Schedule a time to meet the Principal/Headmaster/Director


  • What is the school's mission/philosophy?
  • Does this school have an academic specialty? What curriculum is followed?
  • What is the student-to-teacher ratio?
  • What is the availability of teachers to students and parents outside of class?
  • What is the daily class structure?
  • Do you provide breakfast/fruit break/hot lunch?
  • How much time is scheduled for physical education, music, art, foreign language, and recess?
  • What grading system is used?
  • How is my child's academic progress reported?
  • If my child should need extra assistance, what programs are there to accommodate this need?
  • Which schools do most students attend upon graduation?
  • Is transportation provided?
  • Do you have an after school program?
  • How are parents involved?
  • How long has the school been accredited? By which organizations?
  • How may I obtain a copy of the annual report?


  • Does the public or private school meet the needs of my child and support our family values?
  • Have we budgeted for tuition for elementary education? Should we begin or continue budgeting for now and/or for middle school, high school, college?
  • Do we qualify for tuition assistance?
